Nobody photographs the timing mat. They photograph the medal. For a lot of entrants it is the object that proves months of 5am swims happened, and it goes on a rack at home next to every other race they have done.
That is why we push organisers towards larger diameters, thicker profiles and real relief depth. A triathlon medal that feels light in the hand undoes a lot of goodwill at the finish line.
Every triathlon medal on the market has the same three silhouettes on it. The ones people keep have something local: the lake, the bridge, the climb everyone complains about, the coastline.
We build that into the shape and the relief, then use the ribbon for the race name, the year and your sponsors.
Race weekends run several distances plus relays and age-group podiums. Keeping one design family and changing the finish, the distance marker and the ribbon means everything looks like one event, and the whole weekend counts as a single order.

Yes. Sprint, standard, middle and relay awards usually share one design family with the distance changed on the medal face or the ribbon, which keeps the branding consistent and the order over the minimum.
Sponsor logos work well on the reverse, on a printed insert, or repeated along the ribbon. Plenty of organisers cover a good chunk of the medal cost that way.
Heavier than a club medal. Most organisers go 70mm and up with a thicker profile, because for a lot of finishers this is the object that proves the whole season happened.
Give us the race date and we work backwards. Four to six weeks is comfortable, and getting the concept approved early is what protects the schedule.
